The Drummer Boy of Richmond
Fancy a walk with a bit of edge to it? Head to Richmond this weekend.
Centuries back, soldiers sent a drummer boy into a tunnel beneath the castle, supposedly running all the way to Easby Abbey. They tracked him above ground by listening for his drum.
The beat carried across the fields until it didn't. Somewhere near Easby Woods, it stopped dead. No trace of the lad was ever found.
Some reckon he stumbled into a hidden chamber where ancient knights lie sleeping, waiting for England's darkest hour. Others say something else found him first.
Walk the footpath from Richmond Castle to Easby Abbey on a still autumn evening and see if you can hear anything. The Drummer Boy Stone marks the spot where the drumming stopped.
Best done in daylight, that one. Or with company!
